The blog and story of Bob “Diesel” Crowley’s preparation and training for the Western States 100 Endurance Run to be held on June 27, 2009 starting at Squaw Valley, California and ending 100 miles later in Auburn, California. This is my third attempt to finishing the run after failing to complete the course in 1994 and 1996. I began ultra running in 1991, competing in the sport of Ride & Tie with Perry Edwards, a dear friend, superb teacher and accomplished athlete. Once on the trails, I was hooked. Dozens and dozens of ultras and many years later, I still have one and only one race that I never finished - Western States. It’s ironic since Western was essentially my “home course” for 12 years while living in Fair Oaks, CA.
I’ve lived in Weston, MA, just 15 miles west of Boston, for the past 12 years with my incredibly supportive wife and best friend, Marcy and my pride and joy sons Patrick and Drew.
May the trail rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face;
the rains fall soft upon your single-track trails and until we meet again,
may God hold you in the palm of His hand.
traditional gaelic blessing (modified for trail running!)
